| What have we been up to lately? |
Well, we've been busy. We went to Fort Lauderdale, then the Bahamas, then to Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, then Key Largo and back to Fort Lauderdale. While we were on Sanibal Island in Florida Sue got her diving certification. It was almost like we brought our Alaska weather to Florida. It hit 32 degrees while Sue was in the water! The dolphins at Key Largo were amazing! They're smarter than a lot of people that I know. Our next trip was to London, Dublin, Bruges, Paris, Verona, Venice, Bologna and Amsterdam was AMAZING! We were exausted by the time we returned but was a truly amazing educational opportunity. In London, we had an "Advanced Haircutting" class with Metin Warwick. Metin was really great and his heart absolutely FILLED the room. He truly cares about the beauty industry and about every single person IN the industry. This is obvious by both his personality and his teaching methods. Every single person taking one of his classes will leave with many, many things that they can begin using the very next day in their salons. On top of being very energetic, creative, and fun, he is truly a really nice person to be around! GREAT class Metin, "it was crackin'"! Feel free to contact him for some advanced training or plan a trip with us and go with a group. Your choice! We also had a couple of great meals at Magdalen's Restaurant in London. The Mad Hatter Tea Party at the Sanderson was also a lot of fun. Cosmoprof Bolognawas really a kick, but it was HUGE! Not big, not quite large, absolutely gigantic! This one show is about as big as any six other big hair/beauty shows that we've attended. There were some great styles, some great products, and what a show they put on. But... there were a few glitches with this show that we could have done without. We felt really comfortable in Venice, in Verona, and in Bologna OTHER than the fact that many of the hairdressers from Rome were amazingly rude! We had our feet run over by suitcases, were smashed into by women with giant bags, three women tried to grab Sigel's arm and wrestle him out of the way. In one instance the woman wouldn't stop yanking on him until he smacked her shopping bag with his walking stick. AMAZING! The final straw was at the airport when a group of 3 Roman hairdressers ducked under 5 security ropes and tried to dart in front of us as we were going through security. THAT was the final straw for Sigel so he tackled one of the women's suitcases but apparently the woman was quite attached to the suitcase so they both went flying out of the security area. SO... I guess that you understand what to expect at this show. Would we go again? Yes. Would we do things differently? Yes. Choosing when to fly to the next destination would have been MUCH better if we had left a day or two later and we could have avoided the amazingly rude Roman hairdressers. So... THIS is the kind of stuff you learn as you travel to these shows and this is the kind of information you NEED to know before you attend this show. IF you are in Italy and there are Roman hairdressers around, you WILL have to tackle at least one just to keep your own place in line. Now you know. Dublin
![]() We didn't make it to the Dublin beauty show this time around but may next year. What we did discover in Dublin was the most amazing Fish & Chips IN THE ENTIRE WORLD at The Gingerman! The lasagne... not so amazing, but the fish... It was absolutely amazing! I've dreampt of them several times since I've been back home in Anchorage, Alaska. AMAZING! We also went to the Irish House Party and that was a kick in the pants. We saw some of the most talented musicians who were also really, really NICE! Our daughter Aly even got to play her accordion on stage with them. YEAH ALY! Verona was also amazing, but it has been amazing every time we've been there. Los Angeles
American Board of Certified Haircolorists - Energizing Summit 2011 (right mouse click to larger view)
We also attended the American Board of Certified Haircolorists, "Energizing Summit" in Los Angeles. The weather wasn't as hot as our last trip when the heat broke all of the weather records at 113 F degrees. This time it was a nice 60's something with a slight breeze. THEY didn't like the weather much but we thought it was great. This was our first trip the the Energizing Summit. What an interesting and valuable venue!!! We have been to a TON of hair, beauty, spa, beauty industry, trade shows all over the world. At each one a a couple of famous names pop up and then some not so famous names, then there is usually a huge room of "merchandise", then there are some break-out rooms, usually with people with marginal skills. THIS event was completely different. For someone to gain as much training as this venue they would probably have to travel to 5 or 6 different shows, pay additional fees for each of the "good" classes, with the accompanying 6 airfares, 6 hotels and 6 rental cars. So, at $300 per ticket, this was a REAL value. The top notch educators that teach the classes were also top notch. We attended 6 different classes and the worst class we attended would probably be rated about a C+, one was about a B, but ALL the others were easily A+ and a couple were so good that they were actually difficult to rate because they were SO good! The two negative aspects of this meeting were the beauty school bashings which occured at 3 of the 5 classes we attended and then on the final forum. Apparently states are different, people are different, salons are different, educators are different but ALL beauty schools are horrible. We know better. The other negative was that there was a strong presence of "The Real Hair Truth", a moronic attempt at a documentary where a hair renter from Orlando pretends to be an industry expert who exposes the dark side of hair. In reality, he is just rumor mongering with no proof of anything. Have you seen this so-called "documentary"? Interested in finding out the truth about this issue? Click HERE. We will be looking for a more positive venue for 2012. Actually, after contacting the ABCH staff we were informed several times that they do not intend to change their focus and thay they are going to continue bashing all schools despite the great work by some. So, we're not taking a group to this event this year nor will we endorse this group for any future event until they begin treating good beauty schools with more respect instead of tarring ALL beauty schools with the negative attributes of the bad schools out there. It's hard to imagine overcoming all of the things that we have had to and we provide such successfuls programs, so to be bashed by the very people we paid to educate us, well, that's not something we're willing to put up with. The Alaska esthetician state board pass rate was only 22% when we started our esthetician program and our pass rate is always in the 90%'s. In the mean time, California had five months last year when NOBODY passed the state board esthetician exam! Our hairdressing program teaches techniques nobody else on the west coast teaches. So, perhaps those bashers in California should clean up their OWN state before they try and dictate to us how bad the schools are. We know... we ARE a school, and we're one of the best performing schools in the United States! |

| June 2012 *We dropped the "Summit" by The American Board of Certified Haircolorists from this years schedule due to the negativity we experienced during the last Summit towards beauty schools and certain product manufacturers. We contacted the staff at the ABCH but they have refused to treat each beauty school as an independent entity and insist on painting all schools with negativity despite the accomplishments of the good schools. |
